Saint Juan Diego (1474–1548), a Chichimec peasant from Mexico, received the 1531 apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose image on his tilma sparked mass conversions. Canonized in 2002, he is revered as the first indigenous American saint, drawing millions to Mexico City’s basilica. His humble faith and role in inculturating Catholicism in Mexico’s 100–110 million Catholic population make him a symbol of cultural unity.
